In the flesh

Anya Rosen and Jordan Segal

October 18, 2019 - November 27, 201

Anya Rosen and Jordan Segal both work with an intensity that is as equally vibrant as it is violent. In the flesh at Castellain Gallery brings together a delightfully disturbing collection of their works on paper, canvas, and sculpture.

Anya Rosen’s practice explores the relationship between physical desires, pleasure, cultural norms, and morality. Itching with a manic urgency, her drawings both confront and create the feelings of discomfort surrounding these topics. This exhibition includes two bodies of her work; her most recent series of drawings on paper, alongside new canvas works that signify a shift in the artist’s approach. In her drawings on paper, she attacks the page with jagged mark making, manifesting a frenzied energy that she uses to imbue fictional worlds with new life. More recently, Rosen has turned to the canvas to work at a larger scale and utilize a less delicate surface.

At the heart of Jordan Segal’s work is an unhinged manipulation of materials to convey an emotion or frame of mind. He employs no sense of constraint in his practice; Segal sands, scapes, smears, and scorches materials, turning each of his sculptures into a battleground where materials contend. The unconventional assemblage of these materials evoke a sense of managed chaos that bridges the gap between the psychological and the physical. There is a paradoxical sensation that occurs when viewing Segal’s creations. His works are inviting to touch and investigate, and yet they are shrouded in a feeling of danger, a feeling that these objects can and will hurt you.
